Mind the (generation) gap

18 November 2019

by Chris Kirkwood and Natasha Noore

Attracting and retaining quality millennial talent is something businesses who want to remain competitive can’t ignore. Why? Millennials, born between 1980 to the early 2000s, are the largest generation in the workforce, will lead businesses in the future and can bring enthusiasm, innovation and fresh perspectives to the workplace. However, this generation has earned a reputation for breaking conventions, meaning those who fail to innovate and tap into the millennial zeitgeist, may be left behind in the race for talent.

Leanne O’Connor, our HR Leader states “well-paying and stable jobs are always desirable; however, millennials expect, workplaces that value work-life balance and flexibility. ESV have worked collaboratively with our Partners and staff to create a number of initiatives that help us attract and retain Millennial talent.”

Here we share some of the strategies which ESV have embraced;

Offer professional development programs

Offering professional development programs makes millennials feel like their employer wants them to grow and improve with the business. Millennials want meaningful jobs that invest in the improvement of their career. They also want to feel valued, rather than feeling like a dispensable body filling a role.

Allow flexible work arrangements

Flexible work hours and working from home have become more common place with the advancement of technology. Allowing your staff to work outside the constraints of a standard 9-5 day can help them enjoy a hobby, support their loved ones or reduce their weekly commute. Giving your employees the freedom to work within a schedule that is conducive to their wellbeing will boost productivity and attract millennials who value work life balance.

Make your workplace a community

Millennials seek workplaces that value inclusion and community. They want to avoid having to conceal or feel ashamed of their culture, sexuality or disability and bring their authentic selves to work. A diversity a visible inclusion policy will broaden your talent pool by encouraging individuals from all walks of life to apply.
