We caught up with Ami, one of our Secondees, to hear about her incredible journey down under. Having worked at her firm back home since she was 18, Aimee wasn’t looking to leave but felt a secondment was the perfect way to challenge herself and explore something new. With no clear expectations but a determination to embrace the unknown, Aimee’s adventure turned out to be a journey of growth, new connections, and unforgettable experiences.
What inspired you to become a Secondee?
I really wanted to try something new! I’ve been working at my firm back home since I was 18 and I really love it there, so I didn’t want to leave – so I thought a secondment was the perfect opportunity to explore and branch out.
What did you expect your experience would be like, and how does the reality compare?
I didn’t have many expectations, as this was such a new experience for me. I knew I’d learn a lot and gain new experiences, but I didn’t know exactly what to expect.
That said, the experience has far exceeded my expectations. Everyone has been so amazing, and I’ll never forget this journey. I’ve learned so much, not just professionally, but about myself as well.
What has the experience been like?
It’s been incredible! I’ve pushed myself so far out of my comfort zone. I was nervous at first, but I’m really glad I took the leap.
How have you found Australia?
The people have been so friendly and Australia has so much to do. I’ve met so many great people – even on the trains! It’s amazing how open and welcoming everyone is.
What’s been a highlight in your career here and personal life?
Career-wise, I’ve learned so much. Before coming to Australia, I’d completed my exams and had the theoretical knowledge, but working here has given me fresh perspectives and different methods that have really broadened my approach to work.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking about doing this?
Do it! Even if it scares you because it will be an unforgettable experience. I was really nervous when I first got the job and wondered if I’d made the right decision, but I’m so glad I did. It’s definitely worth it.
How have you found ESV?
The people have been incredible. I’ve built connections here that I think will last a lifetime. When I arrived, I didn’t know anyone and had no family or friends in Australia, so it was important for me to come into work every day and engage with everyone. Everyone has been incredibly welcoming and inclusive, and it quickly felt like a second home, which has been really comforting.
